My research group explores the design principles and applications of novel bio-inspired materials. Our research is at the interface of physical-organic chemistry, materials chemistry, and synthetic biology and focuses on the synthesis of novel functional polymers, biopolymers and nanomaterials that can be used to generate artificial cells (protocells) that can self-assemble into tissue-like materials (protocellular materials).
More specifically, we are currently working to develop:
1) New adhesive synthetic protocell membranes
2) The first technologies for the assembly of prototissues with high spatio-temporal resolution
3) Unprecedented forms of metabolism and information processing within prototissues.
Overall, this research aims to address important emerging challenges in bottom-up synthetic biology and tissue engineering, and is expected to lead to practical applications in biomedical engineering, personalised therapy, micro-bioreactor technologies, wastewater treatment and energy related applications.
