Research interests

Polly Galis teaches French language for the department and the University-Wide Language Programme, and is coordinating students’ involvement in several cultural projects such as the Choix Goncourt Royaume-Uni. Her research centres on gender, sexuality and the body in twentieth- and twenty-first-century Francophone culture.

She recently conducted a Society for French Studies Postdoctoral Prize Fellowship at the University of Bristol, entitled ‘Narratives of Pleasure and Protest by Francophone Sex Workers’, and revised her thesis for publication with Peter Lang as a winner of the 2019 Young Scholars Competition (Frank French Feminisms: Sex, Sexuality and the Body in the Work of Ernaux, Huston and Arcan), due to be published in winter 2022.

Polly completed a PhD in French at the University of Leeds, funded by the Leeds 110 Anniversary Research Scholarship, where she tutored and lectured across the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures. She has also  acted as Lecturer for Bristol’s School of Modern Languages, and held administrative and mentoring posts at the University of Westminster.

Polly has published several articles about contemporary women’s writing for L’Esprit Créateur, Cahiers de l’IREF and Women in French Studies, and has co-edited a special issue for L’Esprit Créateur (‘Challenging Spaces and Gazes: The Body in 20th- and 21st-Century Francophone Culture’, 2020) and an edited volume with Peter Lang (Queer(y)ing Bodily Norms in Francophone Culture, 2021). She also has chapters forthcoming with Presses Sorbonne Nouvelle and Wales UP, as well as an article in Nottingham French Studies.

Polly is co-founder of Bristol Arts Film, and a passionate supporter of Women in French associations, having co-organised the 2021 Women in French UK-Ireland conference and an international WiF PGR/ECR symposium in January 2022.
