Research interests

My research interests fall into two broad categories: German-language theatre and peformance culture and multilingual strategies in contemporary literature.

I wrote my doctoral thesis (King's College London, 2016) on the contemporary documentary theatre of the collectives Rimini Protokoll and Milo Rau's International Institute of Political Murder. Each collective draws on the material traces of everyday life and historical events to present new persepctives on contemporary and historical realities on the stage. In this work, I question what the dramaturgical practices of each collective do to our understandings of reality itself by interrogating their artistic practice through a range of postmodern critical theory.

I have recently begun developing a project on the experience of emotion in German theatre culture in the long 18th century. This work will focus on the vital role played by affect in the relationship between the spectator and the performer in the theatre. To do so I will draw on a range of contemporary dramaturgical, scientific and aesthetic writings alongside playtexts and performance ephemera. This will allow to pursue not only the audience itself, but also the contentious role played by spectators and the(ir) experience of emotion in a defining period in German and European cultural history.

My interest in multilingualism in contemporary literature stems from time spent in Switzerland and encounters with the minority national language, Romansh. In recent years, the number of authors producing German-Romansh multilingual texts has increased, but not all modes of writing are the same. In this work, I explore processes of literary bi- and multilingualism, self-translation and multilingual creativity in the works of Angelika Overath, Arno Camenisch, Leta Semadeni and others.
