Research interests
A leading authority on history of the British Isles in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, on ancient and medieval paganism and magic, and on the global context of witchcraft beliefs. Also the leading historian of the ritual year in Britain and of modern paganism. He is a member of the 'Medieval and Early Modern Cluster' at Bristol.
Research supervision
Would welcome research proposals on:
- The political and religious history of the British Isles 1560-1690
- The seasonal festivals of the British Isles
- Themes in the history of paganism, witchcraft and magic in the British Isles from prehistory to the present.
I currently supervise twenty-two research students, fifteen of whom are working towards PhD degrees: but am still willing to have more!
