Research interests

Dr Sarah Bennett is a Chartered Psychologist and Research Fellow in the School of Psychological Science at the University of Bristol. She is an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society and Honorary Research Fellow in the Centre for Healthcare Research at Coventry University. Her current role, the Sleep Well project funded by The Prudence Trust and led by Professor Lucy Yardley, focuses on co-creating and evaluating an online support program for sleep problems in young people. Sarah's research interests include self-management of long-term musculoskeletal conditions, co-creation and behaviour change techniques.

After graduating from the University of Exeter with a 2:1 honours degree in Psychology (2011), Sarah completed a masters with merit in Health Psychology at the University of Bath (2013). Her PhD (University of the West of England, 2020) explored the psychosocial impact of Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder and Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes, heritable disorders of connective tissue that can cause chronic muscle and joint pain.

In addition to her research, Sarah is elected Chair of the European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology (EULAR) Knowledge Translation Subcommittee, which aims to foster quick and effective implementation of evidence-based guidelines into practice, improving the care of people with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases. She is an Associate Editor for Rheumatology Advances in Practice, a leading open access journal published by The British Society for Rheumatology (BSR) and Oxford University Press. With Dr Cynthia Ochieng, Sarah is the Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Coordinator for the School of Psychological Science Behavioural Interventions Group (BIG, 2022–Present), and a member of the University of Bristol Disabled Staff Forum.
