Personal profile

Research interests

I work on a project to improve estimates of the timing of ‘peak water’ in glaciated catchments in Central Asia (www.centralasiawater.blog).  For this purpose, I have developed a glacier and snow scheme for the DECIPHeR hydrology model and applied it to the Naryn River in Kyrgyzstan.

Previously, I co-developed a surface mass balance scheme for the land surface component of the Met Office GCM (JULES).  I used this to generate projections of global glacier mass loss under high-end climate change scenarios. I have contributed glacier loss projections to the glacierMIP project to assess the sources of uncertainty in sea-level rise projections.

Prior to that, I developed a parameterisation to represent melt water induced basal siding on the Greenland ice sheet.  The parameterisation was applied to four ice sheet models within ice2sea to estimate the basal sliding contribution to sea-level rise from the Greenland ice sheet. I am also involved in projects to assess the risk of glacier lake outburst floods in Peru and Chile.

My PhD was in modelling the atmospheric mineral dust cycle, using a dust emissions and aerosol transport model (TOMCAT).
