Personal profile

Research interests

I teach film at the University of Bristol and handle media communications and administration for epidemiologists in the Bristol Medical School.

My current research into the history and theory of immersive cinema builds on my PhD thesis, titled 'High Fidelity Widescreen Cinema: VistaVision Film Production and Style in Britain and the USA', which was was funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and based at the Universities of Bristol and Exeter. The project drew on international archives based in the Margaret Herrick Library, British Film Institute and Film Finances. I am currently researching (1) global widescreen cinema and (2) 3-D media.

I hold a PhD in Film (Bristol), an MA in Film and Literature and BA(Hons) in English (both University of York). I have published and presented papers on widescreen technology and archival film history. I have taught film history at the University of Bristol and am an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. I was given Bristol's Cultivating Research and Teaching (CREATE) Excellence Award in 2020.

In 2015, I was a research support assistant for Professor Andrew Higson's HERA-funded MeCETES project at the University of York, for which I studied the production and reception of European historical cinema.

In 2018-19, I undertook an AHRC collaborative placement at the Bill Douglas Cinema Museum, University of Exeter, one output of which was the 'Widescreen South West' interactive exhibit, which engaged Museum visitors with regional innovation in post-war British film exhibition.

I am a member of the British Association of Film, Television and Screen Studies' Colour and Film Special Interest Group (SIG).
