Research Project:-

'Sisters and Brothers: A Sibling Perspective on Post-Adoption Contact'

The purpose of this exploratory study is to provide an opportunity for people who have been separated from their siblings in childhood, through adoption, to look back from the perspective of adulthood and describe how the decisions made for them when they were children have affected their lives.

This study aims to explore the experiences of children who were placed for adoption following the introduction of the Children Act 1989, which placed a duty on courts to give due regard to, children’s “wishes and feelings” before making decisions that will affect their lives and, where possible, to place siblings together.  The introduction of this legislation in 1991 altered the approach to adoption, making it more open and increasing the need to consider contact with birth relatives.
