Personal profile

Research interests

I am a world-leading expert in the archaeology of the Mediterranean's Iron Age, a period that extends between c.1100-c.600 BCE. My particular expertise lies in the impact of colonisation, and the construction and expression of social identities. I use postcolonial and globalisation theories to examine the interactions and influences between the various communities and cultures of the Mediterranean during this period of unprecedented connectivity. Unusually, my research spans the traditional disciplines of Near Eastern Archaeology and Classical Archaeology. My major recent publications on this topic include The Routledge Handbook of Archaeology and Globalization (Routledge 2017) and The Archaeology of the Mediterranean Iron Age (Cambridge University Press 2020).

In addition, I spearhead the Globalising Luxuries research project, a multi-strand collaboration with the British Museum that explores the role luxuries play in the social and economic relations in the late second and first millennia BCE wider Mediterranean. Using a variety of methodologies, our work is revealing how luxuries were created, circulated, and used as social indicators within a cross-cultural framework to transcend cultural differences between Mediterranean societies. Project activities include a major, international British Museum touring exhibition (Hong Kong: 2018; Spain: 2019-2020) and a series of analytical studies on organic luxuries including ostrich eggs and ivories

I have over twenty-five years of fieldwork experience in the eastern Mediterranean. This has been primarily in Turkey, where I am a recognised specialist in Iron Age ceramics.  From 2021, I am planning to commence new fieldwork in Israel at the site of Tel Dor in collaboration with colleagues from Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil.
