Personal profile

Research interests

I am broadly interested in applications of the Internet of Things (IoT) in infrastructure sectors and the collection of urban data. Most of my current work is in the field of urban sensing including energy-efficient deployments of wireless sensor networks, sensor integration with building management systems in intelligent buildings and design of secure IoT applications or open data architectures for urban challenges. More recently I have worked on digital twinning of infrastructure assets. In general, my research addresses questions of how emerging technologies can be used to deliver a more sustainable urban future through resource efficiency, resilience and operational improvement, or event step change, of infrastructure systems.

I am also interested in applying Systems thinking and cybernetics for information and risk management in this context, including system dynamics and viable system modelling, network analysis and game theory. I consider Systems thinking a fundamental approach to understanding and dealing with complexity, especially in cities and civic technology development.

Finally, I have experience with IT auditing and digital forensics, looking at compliance, governance and the extraction and analysis of digital evidence, particularly from emerging technologies such as embedded systems, wireless sensor networks and social media. I have acted as an Expert Witness in court for a number of cases in the past.
