Research interests

My research interests include social history, the history of childhood and youth, the history of Hong Kong, and the history of the British Empire. More specifically, I am fascinated by how the historical study of children and youth could enhance our understanding of colonialism.

Before I joined the Hong Kong History Centre, I completed my MPhil in History at the University of Hong Kong. My MPhil thesis titled ““Guiding the Youth of the Colony”: The Girl Guide Movement in Hong Kong, 1916-1997” used the Hong Kong Girl Guide movement as a case study to examine how a British uniformed youth organization developed in colonial Hong Kong. It seeks to reveal the relationship and importance of the Hong Kong Girl Guides Association to colonial governance.

Building on my MPhil research, my doctoral project will look into how young people were governed in post-war Hong Kong from 1945 to the 1970s under the global trend of decolonization and the growing Cold War tension in Asia. It will explain the staggering change in the colonial government’s attitude towards youth welfare policies, addressing how the colonial state linked up with voluntary youth organizations to deal with the problems of ‘juvenile delinquency’ and regulated youth leisure. It also engages the broader imperial context by examining how the post-war youth policy in Hong Kong compared with the metropole and other British colonies, addressing to what extent it was an influential model in and of itself.
