Personal profile

Research interests

I am a Lecturer in Social Work with Children and Families in the School for Policy Studies. I am also a registered Social Worker with a background in children and families’ practice.  I have worked in a range of statutory and non-statutory settings safeguarding and protecting children from harm. I am a qualified Independent Domestic Violence and Adviser (IDVA) and have experience of supporting families who are living with violence both in the UK and overseas.

Having spent time supporting women and children in a community centre in Mexico and in women’s Refuge in New Zealand, I have a keen interest in international social work practice. My research interests primarily focus upon the challenges of safeguarding children effectively. More specifically, how we work with the complexities and challenges of children living with neglect so as to improve their overall health and welfare. I am particularly interested in interprofessional communication and safeguarding practices across agencies.

Methodologically I have experience of mixed methods approaches, quantitative and qualitative: social work case file analysis, semi-structured interviews, non-participation observation, and focus groups. I have particular familiarity with researching sensitive topics with children, families, and professionals in school and social work settings and of undertaking research within different cultural contexts.
