Personal profile

Research interests

I am a medieval historian, specialising in socio-cultural, environmental, and economic perspectives of monastic history. My research explores areas of monastic interaction with regional lay communities, with a particular interest in commemoration practices, saints’ cults, landscape history, and foreign and domestic trade. My work identifies reciprocal processes of impact and exchange in a range of contexts to explore the role of medieval monasteries in local societies.

I joined the History Department at Bristol in 2019. Prior to this, I was a lecturer with the Centre for History at the University of the Highlands and Islands and a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Stirling, working on a project on Arbroath Abbey with Historic Environment Scotland.
