Personal profile

Research interests

I am a health services researcher with an interest in improving the health and wellbeing of people living with chronic musculoskeletal conditions. I conduct research that spans the translational pathway and impacts on patient care through informing NICE guidance and changing NHS practice. My research aims to improve patients’ outcomes and experiences of interventions for musculoskeletal pain, with a particular focus on evaluating interventions to optimise outcomes after orthopaedic surgery, such as hip and knee replacement. I am committed to ensuring that health research is inclusive, through involvement of patients and communities in all stages of the research process.

I currently lead the RADICAL trial, a NIHR HTA-funded randomised trial evaluating the clinical and cost-effectiveness of radiofrequency denervation for chronic low back pain. I am also Chief Investigator on the Joint PREP study, a NIHR RfPB-funded feasibility study for a randomised trial evaluating pre-operative exercise and nutrition for frail patients undergoing hip and knee replacement. I am Joint Lead Applicant on a RfPB-funded project to develop a care plan for patients having knee replacement. Other NIHR-funded research that I am involved in covers topics such as patellar resurfacing, implant type for hip replacement, injections for osteoarthritis, sleep and implementing research findings into NHS practice. I am Co-Theme Lead for Surgical and Orthopaedic Innovation in the Bristol Biomedical Research Centre.

For the MSc in Orthopaedic Research Methods and Evidence-Based Medicine, I am Lead for the Research Projects Unit. In the iBSc in Clinical Sciences, I co-lead a Unit on clinical research methods in chronic diseases.
