Personal profile

Research interests

My research explores cultural exchange in the medieval and early modern periods, working at the intersection of art historical studies, literature and cultural history. I am particularly interested in the relationship between travel literature and visual culture in the Mediterranean world. I am currently writing a monograph on Ottoman costume books and editing several unpublished early modern travel accounts.

Before joining the University of Bristol, I held positions at Aalborg University in Denmark, the Freie Universität and Forum Transregionale Studien in Berlin, and a number of visiting research fellowships in Ankara, Athens, and Rome. I completed my PhD in Art History under the supervision of Professor Paul Binski FBA at the University of Cambridge.

I have contributed to a number of exhibitions including shows at the British Museum and Minneapolis Institue of Art, and I am also a member of the Editorial Board for the journal Classica et Medievalia:

Teaching

I teach widely across all levels of the undergraduate degree, including: Approaching the Object, Introduction to Medieval Art, Introduction to Early Modern Art, Theorising the Object, Prints, and a specialist unit on fifteenth-century Netherlandish art. I also contribute to several elements of the MA degree programme.

Research Supervision

I welcome enquiries from all students wishing to pursue research on a range of subjects relating to medieval and early modern visual culture. In particular, I am interested in supervising research on Ottoman art, early modern costume books, and representations of the early modern body.
