Description

The School of Anatomy teaching team is an incredibly enthusiastic, motivated, and dedicated educators who put the student at the heart of everything they do, going above and beyond on a regular basis to ensure that their delivery - which spans 4 faculties, supports all schools within their faculty, professional programmes and their own programmes. As a practically intense subject, the team have had to adapt over 4400 contact hours, creating a pivot plan of engaging, interactive, and bespoke material using the School’s own specimen collection – this has ensured a ‘Bristol feel’ throughout, even when students have been less able to access Bristol facilities. As part of this preparation and pivot plan, the team have implemented and embedded practical teaching for home, via the use of the ‘Anatomy@Home’ kits, consisting of plastic human full size skeletal material and real canine bone sets for 3D, haptic tasks that students could complete from home. For example, all Year one Medics took home a plastic adult human half skeleton; all Year one dentists were provided with a full size plastic human skull, and all year 2 Applied Anatomists and Vet nurses were provided with a plastic adult human half skeleton and real canine half skeleton. Activities from home have included anatomical drawing, modelling, and creation to help enhance the blended experience for the students. In addition to creating and delivering online resources, the team have delivered face to face practicals in a socially distanced and COVID safe way, permitting students access to the Dissection Room facilities. This also required adaptation of sessions to ensure that the student experience was as fulfilling as possible (academically and personally, many students only meeting peers in these sessions) within the constraints of COVID regulations. These benefits were bestowed on students on the Applied Anatomy, Gateway, Functional and Clinical Anatomy, Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science, and Veterinary nursing programmes within the Faculty of Health Sciences and student in many other programmes who take units that the team deliver. Weekly Q&A videos, FAQ resources, and padlets and discussion boards have meant that students have had a voice throughout, even when socially distanced, and this has helped the team create a bond with the students on the units. The team have gone above and beyond working to achieve this in this COVID year, and this is evidence of their diligence and dedication to their job. The team is always innovative and driven and this year has presented challenges, but has been an excellent exercise for their teamwork and enthusiasm and the results are a testament to that.
