Peter Hansell was the founding editor of Medical and Biological Illustration (now the Journal of Visual Communication in Medicine).

10 Peter Hansell Medals were cast and are only awarded should a paper submitted by an Institute of Medical Illustrators' member to the journal be deemed to be of an outstanding quality.

Awarded for the paper 'Recording the Diseased and Deceased: A Historical Look at Medical Illustration in 19th Century Bristol' published in the Journal of Visual Communication in Medicine.
