This project commemorates the 14th anniversary of the 3/11 disaster and reflects on its lasting impacts through two key events: a film screening and an academic workshop. On March 11, we will host the UK premiere of The Invisible Island by Keïko Courdy, followed by a Q&A. This documentary explores the human and environmental repercussions of the Fukushima catastrophe through the voices of residents and workers still grappling with its aftermath. Courdy’s work provides a sensitive reflection on hope and resilience, making this event a poignant tribute to those directly affected by the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear crisis. On March 12, the workshop The Art of Recovery: Cross-disciplinary Approaches to the Fukushima Disaster, will bring together international experts and artists to examine the roles of artistic, media, and religious practices in addressing the social and emotional dimensions of the incident. Topics will include managing and documenting environmental and technological calamities, exploring how local and translocal actors have aided recovery efforts, and assessing the role of the arts in healing, memory, and restoration. The aim of both events is to deepen understanding of the responses to the triple disaster, and to highlight how cultural practices can help address future challenges.
