Academy of Medical Sciences GW4 INSPIRE Round 6

Project Details

Description

Rationale: To renew the Academy of Medical Sciences INSPIRE grant to help fund and support undergraduate medical, dental and veterinary research. This will include the addition of new activities such as One Health. Bristol is the only GW4 university with medical, veterinary and dental schools, and thus has cultivated a strong One Health drive. Exeter has an existing and active Planetary Health Alliance initiative which we aim to coordinate into one activity.

We will launch an INSPIRE funding stream that will support Planetary Health Showcase events across the four GW4 institutes to enhance networking across its eight medical/dental/veterinary schools. We will provide specific Planetary/One Health Summer Studentship awards (10 studentships/5 pairs per year) to incentivise paired cross-disciplinary projects across schools i.e., medical-vet, medical- dental, dental-vet. We will ringfence additional money to support travel, particularly to LMIC countries and particularly for those from widening participation backgrounds. Projects and case studies of Planetary/One Health projects will be linked from the INSPIRE website (soon to be updated) and promoted across social media by our social media student ambassadors. Project reports will be published under a Planetary/One Health theme in our INSPIRE Student Health Sciences Research Journal (https://inspirestudentjournal.co.uk/), which is also run by the students and funded by INSPIRE.

This will unite students across schools and institutes to collectively address problems of global impact.
