BUILDING PARTNERSHIPS FOR FLOOD HAZARD MANAGEMENT IN INFORMAL SETTLEMENTS IN GHANA

This project will build capacity in flood hazard assessment within Ghana and engage communities in the management and mitigation of flood risk.

We will build capacity in flood modelling in Ghana by training collaborators from University of Ghana and the Engineering Council of Ghana in the use and application of models for flood impacts developed at Bristol. Assessment of flood impacts at urban scales in informal settlements requires high resolution mapping of the built environment, and we will conduct this through the vehicle of a community-based activity. This will also serve to engage those threatened by flooding and develop shared understanding of both the hazard and its impacts, and existing community responses to flood events.

This is an important initial step towards carefully formulated anti-flood/adaptation strategies, which combined with fiscal and social protection policies can protect the people, their resources and also stimulate pro-poor growth and reduce poverty in these communities.
