Experimental modelling of variably-fluidised pyroclastic density currents

Project Details

Description

British Society for Geomorphology Early Career Researcher Grant

Developing new experimental equipment to explore the defluidisation and refluidisation of granular currents, and how this enables to deposition and growth of varied bedforms.

Layman's description

Injecting gas into sandy materials enables them to flow freely. By controlling the amount of gas injected, and allowing flows to come to a halt, this project focussed on whether we could remplicate the sedimentary structures found in pyroclastic density currents, and what we might be able to say about the physical properties within natural flows.
