Description
The purpose of the study was to assess the risk factors associated with forced marriage and the effect of raising the minimum age for entry for a sponsor or spouse from the current age of 18 to 24. It examined the ways in which forced marriage is understood and experienced in different communities.
The study was commissioned by the Home Office and used a case-study methodology across 3 locations in the UK: Tower Hamlets (London), Birmingham and Manchester. It involved:
• 58 interviews with national and local stakeholders and 38 survivors of forced marriage (33 women and 5 men),
• a mapping survey of 79 community organisations,
• 15 focus groups (97 individuals) from a range of communities and ages,
• and a scoping exercise of 28 agencies to ascertain the quality of existing data on forced marriage.
