Fostering Gender Equality in Cycling Media

Project Details

Description

The project draws upon research by Hurcombe and Spotswood into the representation of gender in a range of media concerned with the promotion of cycling. This has demonstrated that despite considerable progress in recent years 1) representational practices continue to frame cycling as a predominantly male sporting practice, and 2) women are a minority within the cycling media industry, often confined to peripheral roles, and therefore sometimes feel marginalised within the industry. In partnership with our media, this project addresses a widely accepted need in the industry to take active steps towards gender parity through the organisation of two workshops where we seek to learn from women sports writers' experiences.
