Kings Weston Roman Villa Heritage Engagement Project

Project Details

Description

This project focuses on creating a learning resource pack and public engagement programme centred on the Kings Weston Roman Ruins in conjunction with the Bristol Museum and the Department of Anthropology and Archaeology. It highlights themes of Roman life in the area, using the Bristol Skills Profile to provide students with opportunities to develop key transferable skills through active involvement in heritage projects, and addressing cultural / educational needs in an underserved community. This will be focused on developing skills of students studying Anthropology, or Anthropology and Archaeology degree programs.
Unlike timetabled placements, which often do not align with practical heritage or organisational need, this project will ensure student contributions meet real-time priorities for the Villa and the local community. Students will lead open day activities at the villa with themes of their choice relating to Roman life. This will be used to develop learning materials, including a resource pack for schools. This work will culminate in the Festival of Archaeology in July. As part of the legacy of this project, students will then evaluate their experience and make recommendations for further volunteer/work experience programmes to ensure engagement with the Museum and the Villa continues.
Students will work with professionals to ensure resources are relevant to local needs and educational standards, using resources and support from the Bristol Museum and Department of Anthropology and Archaeology. Students will also shadow Museum Teams, including the Curator of Archaeology and the Visitor Services Team to learn the skills required to run a heritage site.
