Oblique Classicisms: Reimagining Classical Reception and its Hidden Histories

Project Details

Description

Classical Reception Studies is generally centred on the idea of ‘relevance’, focusing on areas or texts from antiquity that clearly impact modernity. Indirect classical links and undercurrents are typically understudied since, arguably, their influence is harder to spot. ‘Oblique Classicisms’ will flip this approach on its head, focusing on classical receptions where the connection with antiquity is indirect, but nonetheless significant. It seeks to develop a new multidisciplinary paradigm for reading antiquity ‘on a slant’, redefining the ways we understand classical forms and their presence in our modern world.
