With funding from Research England during 2023 we (the Animal Welfare and Behaviour group based at Bristol Veterinary School) developed and produced a handbook. We are a diverse group, and many members primarily work remotely – limiting in-person opportunities to get acquainted, foster a good working culture and share information about policies and values. Our handbook aims to mitigate this by serving as an introduction to the group for new members (actual and potential), and a reference document for current ones. With representativeness in mind, all group members had opportunity to contribute (e.g., during lab meetings, using surveys, and by giving feedback) as each section was written. Notable successes included a collaboratively devised and written mission statement, and discussion and agreement on authorship guidelines. Areas requiring further work include ensuring the views of postgraduate students contribute to the written document, and further development of our group’s distinct values. Overall, the process of producing our handbook as a group, and making it accessible to all, has been a positive step forward in improving our research culture and inclusivity.
