UK Feature Docs: Studying the Feature Documentary Film Industry

This project aimed to increase knowledge and understanding of the contemporary feature-length documentary film industry in the UK. It had three core objectives: 1) to map the industry and analyse its operation; 2) to historicise the industry's formation and the factors that have shaped its development; and 3) to investigate the criticisms and challenges the industry faces and explore how these might be addressed.

Key findings

The findings of this project were published in two project reports - Keeping it Real (2020, 72 pp.) and Making it Real (2021, 68 pp.) - and several other publications. The project led to Follow-on Funding for Impact and Engagement and the formation of the Documentary Film Council.
