Using a Lesson Study approach to teaching development to examine the quality of teaching and learning for international students in a research intensive university

Description

The overarching aim of this three year project is to explore the use of the Lesson Study approach to teaching development in higher education (HE) contexts. I propose to investigate the ways that UoB can continue to improve and enhance the teaching, learning and assessment experiences of international students using Lesson Study as a teaching development tool. I am committed to the concept of reflective practice as a tool for continuing improvement in my own practice and that of my colleagues. I am keen to highlight the excellent teaching within the Faculty of Social Science and Law and to share this more widely across the university. The Lesson Study methodology proposed in this project allows for a structured approach to teaching observation, where tutors take part in planned conversations about quality in teaching, learning and assessment. Within the Lesson Study approach these conversations are seen as a deliberate practice with a focus upon the processes of improvement, whilst at the same time allowing for the development of a repository of professional knowledge and examples of ‘good practice’ in HE contexts. The project proposes a collaboration between the Graduate School of Education (GSoE) and the School of Economics, Finance and Management (EFM) in Year 1 & 2 and colleagues from other UoB faculties in Year 3.
