Abstract

Speleology, a widespread activity and science today, few know that to a large extent -at least for Greece- was formed in Kythira through the visits to the caves of the island by Ioannis S. Petrochilos in the 1930s. Through archival material the This edition presents these first researches of Ioannis Petrochilos in Kythira from 1930 to 1960, while outlining the researcher, his approach to the object, as well as the first steps of Greek speleology. Ioannis Petrochilos, Yankos as he was known to his friends and family, is recognized as the patriarch of Greek speleology and one of the pioneers in the scientific study of caves worldwide. Following the journey of Ioannis Petrochilos from Smyrna at the beginning of the 20th century, in the caves of Kythera and finally in post-war Athens, the reader explores the beginnings of a sporting and scientific activity, which many have heard, but few have managed to experience.
