Abstract
One of the most important services that radio provides is communication with mobile receivers of various types. The land mobile service also produces some of the worst conditions for the propagation of radio signals that are normally encountered. This is due to there seldom being a good path between the transmitter and the receiver and, hence, any signal received must he a composite of scattered and reflected waves.
The interaction of these waves arriving at the mobile receiver causes fluctuations in the signal level of up to 4008 several times per second, at VHF. This fading can seriously reduce the intelligibility of speech in an amplitude modulated channel and cause an unacceptable error rate for most types of digital modulation. In order to design radio schemes to reduce the effects of fading it is essential to statistically analyse the process and to be able to predict the result of changes in the system parameters or environment. Since fading is inherently random it is well suited to numerical analysis techniques and, thus, to computer simulation. This paper describes a simulation of the mobile radio environment and, in particular, its application to the Sidehand Diversity Scheme
