Abstract
Line managers are pivotal for a vibrant working environment and a productive labour force. In our three continuous years of conversations with workshop participants – working parents and carers on different career pathways in higher education - line managers were repeatedly mentioned, both for good practices and for support that could be better placed. The nature of support varies individually, but often it is through these highly individualised circumstances that a line manager’s kindness and support come through. In this way, individuals not only form positive relationships in the workplace, but such care and practices also play a crucial and instrumental role in supporting future generations.
The handbook is not a duplicate of comprehensive policy details but aims to complement the impersonal institutional checklists with personal and practical considerations.
