Abstract
A prototype electro-mechanical actuator has been built to replace the hydraulic actuator or mechanical linkage normally used to select gears in a high performance automotive gearbox. The actuator has been designed using a coupled field-circuit model. Tests carried out using a prototype actuator have demonstrated an excellent agreement between the experimental and computed results. Fuzzy logic control has been used to meet the dynamic performance requirements. The actuator can perform a gear change in 10ms whilst producing a peak force of 1kN.
