Abstract
By examining the rule of mixtures (ROM) and the Hashin–Shtrikman (HS) bounds, it is pointed out that the elastic modulus of an isotropic two-phase composite should not exceed the HS upper bound which is well below the ROM upper bound. It is further shown that, with a well-dispersed reinforcement, the composite elastic modulus should be close to the HS lower bound.
