Abstract

An analytical study is presented of the so-called external cavity modes in the Lang-Kobayashi equations, which are a system of delay differential equations that model a semiconductor laser subject to conventional optical feedback. Specifically, the bifurcation set in the space of feedback phase, feedback strength and pump current of the laser is determined. It divides this three-dimensional parameter space into regions with different numbers of physically relevant external cavity modes.
