Abstract

This chapter in Maggie B Gale and Kate Dorney's book uses home video of Lillian Leitzel's act, published video, costume, memoir and embodied understanding of aerial movement to reconstruct aspects of her act. It argues that despite Leitzel’s act relying on a feat of endurance that her performance of femininity reflected concerns regarding the role of women in the interwar period and that this is key to her preeminent celebrity status.
