Abstract
This paper traces competing accounts of an "altercation" in Edinburgh between Mary Ann Yates and Elizabeth Inchbald to set the story straight and to think about the complexities of stage business- both the economic and the logistical -- in the late eighteenth century. I conclude that the challenges of quickly changing repertory and frequent recastings pose challenges for both ingenue and diva and make an "altercation" over some "trifling stage business" almost inevitable.
