Abstract
De novo designed peptides are utilized in increasingly diverse applications. This is due to a better understanding of the rules governing their design meaning peptides, and their self-assembled structures, can be reliably designed and can also be programmed to fulfill a specific function. Development of improved synthesis methods and the decreasing costs of peptide production are also contributing factors. In this chapter, the design principles for common peptide structures are briefly explained before selected examples of functional, de novo designed, peptides that fulfill a wide range of applications are presented. The key design principles of each example are discussed in detail and an explanation of their function is also provided.
