At the crossroads of genres: historical epics or chronicles in epic form?

Abstract

An analysis of certain medieval French texts which contain historical rather than fictional material but which were written in the characteristic and distinctive form of French epic poetry. The paper considers how this mixture of genres affects the reader/listener's horizon of expectations.
