Abstract

Song et al. combine optogenetics with anatomical mapping to determine subcellular organization of cortical input to midbrain. Functional measurements of synaptic strength correspond directly with synapse size measured using mGRASP, revealing that ipsilateral projections to dorsal inferior colliculus provide strongest descending inputs via proliferation of large somatic synapses.
