Abstract

The chapter charts the early developments of formulated aerospace grade matrix resins for composites. Where does a processing aid finish and a toughening agent begin? The often neglected effects of layer morphology on the apparent toughness of laminates are explored, suggesting reasons for the success of modern ‘interlayer-toughened’ resin systems. Different options of through-the-thickness reinforcement techniques are described, with an assessment of their effectiveness in limiting delamination cracking, distinguishing between effects on crack initiation and crack growth.
