Abstract
This paper discusses sustainable procurement as an economic tool for purchasing and contracts processes of the public administration. To undertake this task, the article analyses native timber products and byproducts from the Amazon within the approach of the Friends of Amazon Network (FAN). It analyzes how the purchasing of native timber joins the subnational public administration of the cities of Sorocaba, São Paulo, Porto Alegre and the state of São Paulo. The article identifies the main factors that influence the development of responsible public procurement practices through the analysis of the reasons that led governments to join the programs Cities and States Friends of the Amazon, developed by Greenpeace Brazil till 2008 and integrated in a network coordinated by Fundação Getulio Vargas ever since.
