Abstract
The aim of this report is to enhance understandings of cultural literacy in formaleducational settings by providing a comparative overview of approaches andimplementations across the nine CHIEF countries (including Germany, UK, Spain,Latvia, Slovakia, Croatia, Georgia, Turkey and India). To this end, the report bringstogether the current, dominant approaches to cultural literacy and issues arising fromtheir implementation. The report builds on the findings of the nationalcultural/educational policy reviews and sets them alongside the findings of the nationalcurriculum reviews, to build a comparative overview of the interconnections betweenthe policy frameworks and curriculum guidelines within and across the nine differentcountries.The findings are organised under six sections, representing the main thematiccategories identified in the policy and curriculum reports. These include the discussionof cultural literacy as a concept and the alternative terms used in meeting relatedobjectives as well as the themes of cultural heritage, national culture and identities,Europe, language, religion and history, post-socialism, and post-imperialism.
