Abstract

Dark patterns are embedded in various online platforms to manipulate and trick users. Studies have primarily focused on non-video games-based platforms. We conducted a manual analysis of 500 video game reviews to identify the categories of dark patterns embedded in video games. We examine the ways in which different dark patterns affect the privacy of players and discuss gaps and challenges to be addressed by future research.
