The female other (Saracen) in the chanson de geste is normally subjugated and assimilated by conversion; conversion is gendered in the genre with the female typically surrendering to the Christian hero for love. This article examines women who resist this form if subjugation and are either forcibly converted and married or are allowed to remain Saracen and remain faithful to their Saracen lover.
