Abstract
Question:
Do xylitol-containing products help prevent dental caries in children?
Clinical Answer:
There is only low quality evidence supporting the effectiveness of fluoride toothpaste containing xylitol over fluoride-only products for preventing dental caries in children, with no apparent difference between groups in adverse effects. The trials evaluating other xylitol-containing products (lozenges, sucking tablets, wipes) compared with no xylitol, were far too small to provide clinically meaningful results. One small trial (94 participants) suggested that 8 grams daily of xylitol oral syrup may be more effective at preventing caries on primary teeth than a low dose of 2.67 grams daily.
