Abstract
In revisiting Peter Townsend’s classic study of residential care, The Last Refuge (in the course of which he covered 173 care homes in the late 1950s), we employed 79 locally based volunteers, mainly older people, to find out what became of the homes after 1959. This chapter describes how and why the volunteers were recruited and how they benefited both the research and themselves.
