Abstract

An afterword to the first English translation of this canonical Czech novel from 1913, an adaptation of the German legend best known in English through Browning's poem 'The Pied Piper of Hamlyn'. The afterword examines the work in the light of both the Czech social, political and cultural contexts, particularly Czech nationalism, and also in the broader context of literary Modernism.
