Abstract
Ultrasonography of the superficial and abdominal lymph nodes is essential for diagnosis and screening for neoplastic processes such as lymphoma, histocytic sarcoma or carcinomas. By combining several ultrasonography criteria, normal and reactionary lymph nodes can often be differentiated from tumoral lymph nodes. The former are generally oval and isoechoic with neighbouring tissue, the hyperechoic hilus is sometimes visible, and vascularisation is central (hilar). In contrast, the latter are larger, rounded, anechoic and/or heterogeneous with possible loss of visibility of the central hilus. The vascularisation is initially peripheral then becomes mixed.
