Abstract

The production of ice slurry from supercooled NaCl brine utilising a vertical helical coiled heat exchanger, containing nylon piping, was studied. Process optimisation was investigated by assessing the effect of reversing internal flow on temperature distribution within the refrigeration bath. Slurry ice fraction was taken as an additional performance indicator. Reversing the flow direction altered the temperature distribution within the refrigerant bath, with a larger temperature gradient created within the bath when the fluid enters at the top. similar maximum ice fractions were achieved for both flow direction, through fluid entered the top of the coil used a warmer bath temperature to achieve this ice fraction. Similarities to concurrent and countercurrent exchangers in the temperature distributions were discussed.
