Abstract

The Delphi method is used to build expert consensus on complex, transdisciplinary issues, yet the selection and reporting of voting schemas remainin consistent, affecting transparency and comparability. This paper introduces a heuristic framework to guide voting schema selection. A Delphi study with eleven participants compared three vote elicitation and in-study reporting methods, and four consensus analysis methods, to assess the framework’s validity. The findings contribute: (1) a novel heuristic, featuring five requirements for voting schema selection in Delphi studies; (2) a recommended schema for socio-technical transdisciplinary challenges, combining a Likert scale, frequency count heat map, and Tastle & Wierman’s Consensus and Agreement measures; and (3) practical guidelines for schema selection. This work enhances methodological consistency, transparency and reliability of Delphi studies in transdisciplinary engineering.
